Lesson 4

Dreams

Awareness of Subtle Things

When you dream, you are conscious of things that are subtler than the things you are aware of in your normal waking state. This is true whether you remember your dreams or not.

By becoming more aware of your dream world, you can become more conscious of subtler things all the time. Your attention can then acquire the ability to focus on these kinds of things whenever you wish. You might even become psychic!

Also, by getting better at remembering your dreams, you will automatically begin to become more conscious in your sleep while you are dreaming. Eventually, you can become conscious, while sleeping, of things beyond the realm of dreams.

Here are some hints about dreams to help you remember and understand them better.

Helpful Hints About Dreams

1. The earliest dreams are most often the mind being naturally cleared.

2. If enough clearing takes place during the night, a second phase takes place in which your dreams represent 'status reports.’ Status reports tell you how you are doing in your life.

3. If you pass beyond the status report phase, your dream life enters a third phase in which you receive ‘messages’ giving useful clues about yourself or what to do to improve your life. These dreams usually occur shortly before waking in the morning.

4. Eventually, it is possible to have contact with other beings and to go to other worlds and subtler realms.

Remembering Dreams

Keep notes of your dreams in a journal. If you have trouble remembering your dreams, use a voice activated tape recorder for night time recording or jot down on a handy note pad by your bed, any or all of these:

1. The largest items
2. The most prominent people
3. The most prominent feeling(s)

This will help you remember your dreams the next morning. Sometime during the day, bring your dreams into the physical world by writing them down and/or telling them to someone.

After a while, you will begin to find it easier to remember your dreams.

By keeping a dream journal and sharing dreams with friends, you will be bringing your dreams out into your everyday life. You will find this very effective in helping you to remember more of your dreams, to understand them better and to begin to become aware that you are dreaming while you are actually dreaming. This practice is a very powerful tool for heightening meditation experience.
