Lesson 2

How Meditation Works

Meditation is a steady, unbroken flow of attention to a single object.

In the meditative state, the flow of attention is uninterrupted and on only one thing, one object or idea.

The object of meditation can be located in your body, your mind, your feelings, or your environment.

When you get the idea of how this process works to produce a meditative state, you’ll find that meditation is a very natural thing and very easy to practice.

You can probably imagine dozens of things you could use as an object, but what is this ‘attention’ that flows in between?

Attention and Consciousness

Attention is a feature of the mind. It’s the mind’s radar. It’s a flow of consciousness, a vehicle for perceptions to enter into the mind. Attention is your means of awareness of things other than you.

Wherever your attention goes, your life energy flows with it. The life energy in your body, called prana, flows with your attention. The job of prana is to keep the body well and sustain life. It is the substance of power. The more skilled you become at consciously managing your attention, the more you are able to manage the life energy.

Attention is what makes it possible for you to be conscious (aware) of, or notice, things.

The ability to be conscious is fundamental and precedes the mind’s ability to rationalize or to figure things out.

You have the ability to be conscious of anything you are not, including your own body, feelings, and mind.

Anything of which you can be conscious—perceive, notice, be aware of — is not really YOU.

You are being conscious of what you are reading on this page right now.

Experiment #1

Your attention is a fascinating aspect of your mind. To become more familiar with it, periodically throughout your day, notice when your attention moves out through your eyes, ears, nose, tongue, or skin to perceive objects in the environment, and when it focuses in on thoughts, feelings, or physical sensations. What are your observations?
